Most people will remember the station name Messe Süd , simply called Eichkamp before 2002. However, only a few know that the original stop, opened in 1896, was located 250 meters southeast of today’s station—specifically where the S-Bahn tracks from Westkreuz to Grunewald pass under the present-day Cordesstraße and the rails spread far apart.

The exterior colour of a train car may seem irrelevant to most passengers, but its punctual departure and the availability of seats are far more pressing concerns. However, the colour of the trains is no trivial matter, and the story behind the choice of colours and the various designs is rather fascinating.

Following the end of the anniversary celebrations, we have outlined the facts on two panels in our anniversary exhibition.

So, if you'd like to delve deeper into the colour choices and discover why some trains have three narrow longitudinal stripes as a "belly band" (see photo) while others have two very thick ones, you should visit us again! Here's a little hint: it is related to the train's top speed.

Furthermore, our "treasure chest" filled with old timetables, signs, antique books, and postcards offers plenty of browsing opportunities.

Yesterday, on December 31, 2024, the anniversary celebrations officially came to their end. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who supported us, providing insights, ideas, and suggestions that helped us contribute our small part to the success of the anniversary celebration. Notwithstanding the major events that took place around the actual anniversary date, August 8, 2024, we welcomed approximately 5,000 visitors to our exhibition. The level of engagement and positive feedback we received has shown us that there is great interest in our work.

Spannend sind nicht nur die Gegenstände, die wir geschenkt bekommen. Spannend sind immer auch die Geschichten dahinter. Diese Arbeiterwochenkarte für die 26. Kalenderwoche 1934 haben wir neu für unsee Ausstellung bekommen. Eine Frau aus Berlin schrieb uns: "... eine Freundin hat diese Wochenkarte auf einem Flohmarkt gekauft und würde sie gerne einem Museum überlassen..."

Es sind diese kleinen, spontanen Aufmerksamkeiten, die unserer ehrenamtlichen Arbeit den Spaß und die Freude verleihen.

Event announcement

The Berlin S-Bahn celebrated its centenary on 8 August 2024. S-Bahn history was communicated at numerous events, bringing the past back to life. One highlight was the special trips on the historic train. Since July, the S-Bahn Museum has been showing an exhibition about the eventful 100 years of S-Bahn history in its project room at Ostbahnhof.

1906 - Alexanderplatz Station with Two Platform Levels

Alexanderplatz Station (II): 'The preparation of the design and the creation of this drawing was done without outside assistance, as sworn by oath, L. Jänecke,' reads the statement under the design for a two-story Alexanderplatz Station from November 1906. Once again, the Schinkel competition was a decisive factor for this idea (which was never realized). Traffic at Alexanderplatz Station had become so heavy that the four tracks of the Berlin city railway were no longer sufficient.

What the current Alexanderplatz station has to do with Berlin's market hall affairs:

Every year on March 13th, the birthday of its namesake, the Architects and Engineers Association of Berlin (AIV) awards the Schinkel Prize. This has been a tradition since 1854, across various categories. The prize is awarded to applicants under 35 years old and is given in recognition of outstanding technical and scientific achievements in the construction field.

As long-awaited, we are finally extending our opening hours, giving you more time to immerse yourself in our three exhibitions. You can leisurely explore the displays, perhaps watch a short film from the bygone days of the S-Bahn, or browse our sales area to find that missing book for your collection.
Starting next week (May 29th), the project room at Ostbahnhof will have the following extended hours:
Wednesday: 12 PM – 4 PM
Thursday: 3 PM – 8 PM
Friday: 3 PM – 8 PM
Sunday: 2 PM – 6 PM
Entry is just 2 Euros. The reduced fare is 1 Euro.

Our latest gift: a railway enthusiast from Frankfurt am Main has donated his handcrafted half-driver's cab to us. We are still looking for the perfect spot to display it...

A bicycle ticket as a "special permit" in postcard format—this is our newest addition, kindly donated by a former employee of the Deutsche Reichsbahn.

The initial versions of the posters for the anniversary have arrived.

The exhibition design is approaching its final stages of completion.

The electrician has arrived! The lights in the room are being replaced, and new power outlets are being installed. A big thank you to the contracting company SPEZMASCHIMPEX.

Progress continues! The exhibition space takes shape more and more with each day. Our old display boards are set up. Next, we will optimize the lighting and install several new power outlets throughout the room.

The new exhibition panels are being filled for the first time.

Opening! What a wonderful moment! On December 15th 2023, over 30 people accepted our invitation and celebrated the opening of the project space with the volunteers. Many longtime supporters attended, and there was great joy that the museum was finally visible again, even if in a very small capacity. It’s not quite the museum, but rather an appetizer of what’s to come.
